We’ll start off in the Blaen Bran Woodland, seeing evidence of the old colliery, brickworks and the Blaen Bran Reservoir. Then quite a long climb will take us to the top of the Myndd Henllys ridge, with excellent views over Cwmbran and Wale’s largest ancient woodland on the horizon. We’ll then head South along the ridge to ascend the Iron Age Twmbarlwm hill fort (419m), with excellent views of Newport, Cardiff and across the Severn Estuary to Avonmouth and Exmoor. Then back along the ridge over Myndd Maen (458m) and on to Myndd Twyn Glas (472m) before heading back down through the Blaen Bran Woodland.
What to bring
Please review the Outdoorlads kit lists for a general guide. The route will sometimes be muddy, sometimes rocky and sometimes steep. Hiking boots, waterproofs, sun protection, extra warm clothing (including hat and gloves), a small rucksack and food and drink are recommended. If you wear trainers, they need to have a deep tread pattern and your feet will get wet and muddy.
Food & drink
Bring enough food and drink for the event. We will stop a few times for snacks and lunch during the walk and may visit a pub after the walk.
