Tunbridge Wells Rocks and the Pantiles Sunday Walk, Kent

This is a lovely walk which takes in the surprisingly central Tunbridge Wells Common, two rocky outcrops known as Harrison and High Rocks respectively, the village of Groombridge, glimpses of the Spa Valley steam railway and finally the fabulous festive atmostphere of the famous Pantiles of Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Tunbridge Wells is known for its supposed status as a rather posh Kentish town and perhaps that is why it is has been able to maintain nice countryside very close to the town centre. We shall set off and very soon find ourselves in quiet country lanes and looking up at the looming bulk of the High Rocks.
Passing these, we make our way through woods and open countryside until we pass very close to Groombridge Place. After that, through the village and we enter the open access land of Aytton's and Birchden Woods to gain access to the Western base of Harrison Rocks. Following this path as you can see in the photos but in the opposite direction, we journey South and then follow a trail which leads to a tunnel up through to the top of the escarpment and a great photo opportunity for those brave enough to stand near the edge.
Thereafter we make our way through varied countryside and back to High Rocks. We shall not enter this private area as a fee is necessary, but we can walk very close and then follow the route of the Spa Valley Railway back to its terminal of Tunbridge Wells West station. After that we enter the town where we can browse shops and pubs in the Pantiles and thence back up the old High Street to reach the main railway station.
