For a late summer city break, we head to the City of Liverpool.

Liverpool became a city in 1880 and celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007. The city lies on the eastern side of the Mersey estuary. Liverpool's status as a port has contributed to its diverse population, drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly those from Ireland and Wales. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.

Liverpool is known as the World Capital City of Pop having given the world acts such as The Beatles, Teardrop Explodes, Dead or Alive, Cilla Black, Echo and the Bunnymen, Gerry and the Pacemakers, OMD and Atomic Kitten.

Not surprisingly, Liverpool is home to a wide range of cultural activity. The Tate Liverpool and Walker Art Gallery are both world-renowned galleries. Museums include the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum. Architecturally, there are over 2,500 listed buildings in the city.
