Caving covers all underground activities such as horizontal and vertical caving as well as mine exploration. They can be either led by OutdoorLads members who are already qualified, or by another organisation, with the OutdoorLads Event Leader taking a liaison role between the two groups. Underground events can take place as stand-alone day events or form part of weekend events such as hostels or camps.
You will be able to successfully run events underground for a minimum of 4 people and maximum of 10. You will need to have all the relevant certifications required to instruct others in either caving or mine exploration in the area you are caving in at the level you are caving at. You will carry a first aid kit and know how to use it.
You will be able to successfully run underground events led by another organisation for a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 10. You will be the person who liaises between the organisation providing the event and OutdoorLads. You will be able to build up a good relationship with others and be a great ambassador of OutdoorLads. You will meet members on the day and take the group register before joining in the event yourself. You should carry a first aid kit and ideally know how to use it.
If you are unqualified, but wish to lead caving events, you should apply to be a Misc Leader. State on your application that you are interested in leading events underground.
WHAT WILL I NEED TO DO TO BE A CAVING LEADER?
After applying and going through any necessary training, you will need to agree a suitable date for your practical assessment with your local Training Admin and your local OutdoorLads Regional Coordinator. You will then need to show that you have the necessary skills to be a good caving leader, including providing all certifications if qualified and dealing with any issues members may have during the course of the event.
On passing your assessment you will need to lead a minimum of 4 underground events a year to maintain your Event Leader status. These will be arranged in conjunction with your local Regional Coordinator and could form part of weekend events such as hostels or camps. You will ideally complete an Activity First Aid course if unqualified. If you are already qualified to lead caving expeditions you must be first aid trained. You will also need to sign a non-disclosure agreement before gaining access to sensitive data including next-of-kin information.
