Cotswold Cheese Rolling Walk

Join us for a very scenic and interesting walk mostly devised by Mike W along the very western edge of the Cotswolds, and passing the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling contest. This famous annual race down an astonishly steep hill takes place near the village of Brockworth, and people from all over the world take part. From the top of the hill a 9 lb round of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled, and competitors race (or tumble!) down the hill after it. The cheese can reach speeds up to 70 mph and injuries are commonplace. We won’t be taking part but it will be fun to watch the proceedings whilst eating our lunches.
In addition to the cheese rolling competition the walk passes 3 pretty villages, some spectacular views from Birdlip Hill, a lake, and the site of a Roman Villa. This is a bit of a hilly walk but with a good reward factor. We start with an easy going 300' climb up to Coopers hill, drop down a bit before rising up to Birdlip Hill which at almost 900' ASL is one of the highest points in the Cotswolds, then drop to cross the valley before back over the backside of Coopers hill. It looks like having some fabulous views.
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch with you and plenty of water. We pass a couple of pubs on the way around at approx 1/2 way and 3/4 way and there may be time for a quick drink in either or both.
You might like to have tea afterwards at the Abbey shop if still open.
