Burwash, Bateman's and the Rother Valley

Burwash in East Sussex is probably best known as the location of Bateman's, the former home of Rudyard Kipling, the author of the Jungle Book, among many other stories. Now owned by the National Trust, this lovely old house is nestled in a beautiful undulating landscape of woods and valleys, streams and meadows.
Our walk today takes in part of the valley of the River Rother, which sources in a place called Rotherfield and emerges at Rye. From there we pass through some of the glorious countryside of the High Weald, gradually rising to woods just to the North of Brightling.
From here it is a descent to the Bateman's estate, passing the mill pond and working mill and eventually the great house itself. We shall go into the property and spent and hour or two there.
After that uphill a short distance to Burwash and hopefully a stop in one of its pubs. The Bear Inn affords fantastic views back across the valley and the station is a couple of miles from there.
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch and enough to drink with you. There are no shops at all at Stonegate, which is a station in the middle of nowhere.
There shops in Burwash but we will eat before we get there.
