Outdoor First Aid 2024 - Edinburgh

This training course is funded by OutdoorLads, and aimed at Mountain Walk Leaders, Outdoor/Sport Climbing Leaders, and Mountain Biking Leaders. These leaders are required by our insurance policy to have had Outdoor First Aid training to lead these event types. Other outdoor event leaders may book on to this course, but those required to complete the training will be prioritised, should a waitlist develop.
This comprehensive two-day (16 hour) outdoor first aid qualification will give you the skills and knowledge to respond to a range of outdoor emergencies. You’ll learn when and how to move a casualty, how to deal with major illnesses and injuries, administering CPR and managing someone who is unresponsive.
Courses are delivered in a friendly, relaxed manner by experienced outdoor professionals. We keep medical jargon to a minimum with the focus being on practical, active learning. We believe the best way to learn is by ‘doing’ and not by sitting in a classroom with a notebook listening to someone talk at you. Where weather conditions allow, much of the course is taught in the outdoors … exactly where you’d expect to use your new found skills.
Over the two days, we’ll cover a range of outdoor first aid topics including:
- Resuscitation
- Casualty monitoring
- Primary survey/secondary assessment
- Incident management
- Scene survey
- Summoning assistance
- First aid equipment
- Bones, joints and muscle injuries
- Major illnesses
- Burns
- Wounds and bleeding
- Extreme heat and cold
- Respiratory disorders
- Poisoning
- Head and spinal injuries
- Anaphylaxis
- Eye injuries
- Hypovolaemic shock
- Bites and stings
- Chest and abdominal injuries
Leaders from anywhere can attend these events, you don't have to live in the same region.

IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, here, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
What to bring
We'll be working both indoors and outdoors so please bring your normal hiking gear including waterproofs. There'll be lots of lying on the ground so I wouldn't recommend your fancy clothes!
You will need to bring photo ID for the awarding body - driving licence or poasport are ideal.
Food & drink
Please bring food and drink for the day. You'll need a packed lunch and snacks as well as drinks just like you would have with you on a normal hiking day.
