Xmas on eXmoor - Dunkery Beacon wander
7 people attending
8 places left
Let's burn off all the mince pies with a hike over Exmoor! The hike will be going over Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor with spectacular views along the coast up the Bristol Channel and across to Wales.
Starting in Horner Woods, we'll then walk along East Water to Bagley Coombe before turning back east to Dunkery Beacon itself and taking in the view as we walk along Dunkery Hill.
Dogs
Dogs are welcome to join us on this event but we do ask the following:
- Please appreciate the fact that not everyone is a dog owner or lover- especially when we stop to eat
- Please ensure you adhere to the Countryside Code at all times - see (Keeping Dogs Under Effective Control)
If your dog is uncontrolled and strays in open land frightening other animals or livestock, the leader is supported by the OutdoorLads board of trustees to ask you to leave the event as this is not acceptable behaviour.
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
IMPORTANT: Please bring a torch (ideally a headtorch) to this event. Although the plan is to finish this well before dark, at this time of year sunset is at 4.10pm and by 4.30pm it will be dark so it we're delayed slightly, a torch will be needed.
Food & drink
Please bring all food and drink needed for the day. There's no options for cafes or tea rooms on the route so we'll need to be self sufficient.
This includes:
Drinks - I'd strongly recommend both water and a flask of a hot drink such as tea, coffee or soup.
Food - a packed lunch and also any snacks and extra sugar treats to keep you going during the day.
