Wye Valley and Symonds Yat Rock

This walk is being run as a part of the Big South Christmas 2022 hostel weekend but this is your chance to join us for a walk even if you can't make it to the Hostel.
The walk starts and finishes at the Wye Valley YHA at Welsh Bicknor. From the YHA we follow the route of the old Ross and Monmouth railway, from the Stowfield railway bridge, through Highmeadow Woods, to the base of Symonds Yat rock. We then have a climb of aproximately 120 metres to the Iron age hill fort of Symonds Yat rock, where weather permitting we should get all round views of the gorge and River Wye below. The area is also home to various birds of prey, such as the Peregrine Falcon, Buzzards and Goshawks, which can sometimes be seen from this vantage point.
Dropping back down through Highmeadow Woods to the valley below, we will continue to follow the river downstream, where we cross back over the river at Huntsham Bridge, then up to the village of Goodrich for our lunch stop, and a potential post lunch pub stop. After lunch we will walk down to Grade II listed Kerne Bridge, where we pick up the River Wye upstream form the YHA, and follow it down as the river passes beside Thomas Wood and then into open meadows back to where we started.
