The Tolkien Trail

Join Mike and OutdoorLads for a 7 mile walk in the footsteps of J. R. R. Tolkien, famous author of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy and ‘The Hobbit’. We will cross farmland and some woodland and walk along the banks of the River Ribble and River Hodder. Points of interest include Stonyhurst College, where Tolkien spent much of his time whilst writing the books, drawing inspiration from the surrounding areas. We will also pass the historic landmark, ‘Cromwell’s bridge’ on the River Hodder, named after Oliver Cromwell, who marched his army over the bridge in 1648 to fight in the Battle of Preston. This beautiful part of Lancashire is full of history, and with stunning views of Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside, what more could you ask for?
We will stop for lunch at the midway point of our walk and, for those who wish to, there will be an opportunity to have a post-walk drink in one of the local establishments in Hurst Green.

What to bring
Rucksack: a day sack large enough to carry a packed lunch and spare layers of clothing.
Footwear: A robust pair of hiking boots, preferably waterproof.
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally not jeans which become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry.
Waterproof jacket
Waterproof trousers
Hat / sunscreen.
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Food & drink
Water: I would recommend bringing two litres.
Snacks: biscuits, energy bars or fruit etc.
Lunch: please bring a packed lunch as we will have a lunch break at the mid-way point.
Thermos flask: you may wish to bring a hot drinks flask – tea/coffee etc.
