A ticket to Ryde, my (occasional) walk home from work

Join me on a spring walk from the town where I work, Ryde, to my home town of Newport. Meandering through the streets of Ryde until we reach country lanes and disused railway lines - long turned into cycle paths and bridleways - and make our way into Newport.
The day will start with “a ticket to Ryde", taking the Wighlink Fast Cat service from Portsmouth Harbour over to Ryde Pier Head on the Isle of Wight. Once we have docked we will make our way down the recently converted Victorian Tramway, which is now used as a walk way to the shoreline.
At the Esplanade we will begin to head east, heading through the back streets of Ryde until we reach the lanes, and bridle paths which link the Victorian seaside town of Ryde with the ferry port of Fishbourne.
En route we will have lunch at Quarr Abbey, a 19th century abbey which along with the surrounding farm is worked by a small group of Benedictine monks. Situated not far from the ruins of the former abbey, which was demolished under the Dissolution of Monasteries Act of 1536. In the grounds there is a very well stocked shop featuring local produce, and a cafe which does good food, and more, importantly coffee and cakes. There is plenty of room to eat a packed lunch on benches around the grounds, and chill while watching the locals feed the abbey's pigs and seemingly endless supply of piglets.
After lunch we will continue on a slight southwest trajectory, heading through Fishbourne, and Wooton (passing the Postal Museum which I didn’t even know existed until I started walking home from work) until we reach Island Harbour. A small marina which is mainly filled with private leisure boats. Rather oddly sitting in an enviable position by the marina, with great views down the River Medina, is the bus from Spice Girls: the Movie, which could make an interesting photo opportunity (and no I haven’t seen that movie either…).
Passing through the marina we will walk along a bicycle path which runs parallel to the River Medina, and leads us to my home town of Newport. In Newport there should be ample time for a swift half before taking a bus from Newport back to Ryde, or to head straight to Ryde and have a drink there . I aim to get you back to Ryde in plenty of time to catch the 18.45 Fast Cat sailing to Portsmouth Harbour.
What to bring
Wet weather gear is a must , perhaps a dry jumper, or top to change into if the weather turns. Walking boots are also a must - for comfort mostly, the terrain is tarmac, pebble and dirt paths. Thankfully nowhere should be too muddy (he says
If you have a small torch or headlight, this may help to see footings as light starts to fade at dusk
Food & drink
There should be an opportunity to buy lunch at Quarr Abbey, or please do bring a packed lunch. There could be time in Ryde to grab a few bits. Please bring plenty to drink; I always carry 2 litres.
