Join Outdoor Lads for a winter ramble through Cheshire's deer parks, country estates and nature reserves, followed by great food at Altrincham Market
This is a linear walk, starting in Knutsford, from where we'll make our way to Tatton's vast deer park, before we arrive at the hall and garden's, where we'll have our first stop. After our break, we'll make our way through some of Cheshire's countryside, including passing by Rostherne Mere National Nature Reserve, as we head to our second country estate, Dunham Massey. We'll break again in Dunham, before continuing on to Altrincham, where we'll finish with optional food and drinks at Altrincham market.
Points of interest on the route:
Tatton Deer Park: Tatton's deer park was created by royal decree in 1290 AD; currently there are around 400 deer in the park, a mix of red and fallow. Additionally, there are two large meres, which are Ramsar sites due to their biodiversity; and are home to many winter water birds and a large variety of plant life.
Tatton Hall & Gardens: After walking through the deer park, we'll stop for an hour at Tatton's spectacular hall and gardens. Tatton's 18th century neoclassical masterpiece is surround by an equally spectacular botanical gardens. You'll have the choice of either walking around the gardens or relaxing in the stableyard with some food (often produce from the Tatton's farm).
Rostherne Mere National Nature Reserve: This is one of only two national nature reserves in Cheshire; gaining the status due to it's impressive diversity of wintering water birds as well as the biodiversity of it's surrounding woodlands. We'll pass through the south west of the reserve on our route from Tatton to Dunham.
Dunham Massey: Our walk's second country estate is home to an equally impressive 17th century hall and also a 400 year old mill. Dunham also has a deer park, with an impressive fallow heard, which roam around some of the most ancient and impressive trees in Cheshire.
Altrincham Market: We'll end our walk at Altrincham's old market hall, which is now a food hall with an excellent variety of food and drinks. While staying for food is optional, there's an impressive selection that should suit everyone.
