Join Chris on this 6.5-mile (10.5km) walk that begins in Coningsby, following the River Bain before leading into two ancient woodlands and passing the historic village of Tattershall. The route offers a variety of paths through scenic countryside and peaceful woodland, making it a relaxing and enjoyable walk for all.
Before heading into the woods, we’ll stop at The Blue Bell Inn for food. If the pub is too busy, we'll find alternative options, but it's advisable to bring snacks. The walk continues through Tattershall Carr and Tattershall Thorpe Carr, ancient woodlands that were once part of RAF Woodhall Spa during WWII. Some remains of wartime structures can still be seen today, and part of the former airbase now forms Thorpe Camp, a heritage site dedicated to the history of the area.
As we pass through Tattershall, we’ll catch sight of the impressive Tattershall Castle, its 130-foot red-brick tower rising above the village. Built in the 1440s by Lord Cromwell, the castle is one of the finest examples of early English brickwork. Originally a defensive stronghold, it was later used as a grand residence and has been carefully restored by the National Trust. After the walk, for anyone interested there is the option to explore the castle. National Trust members can visit for free, while non-members will need to pay an £11.00 entrance fee.
For those interested in a Parkrun before the event, the nearest one is at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, just 9 miles (16 minutes) away.
