This circular route in South Somerset not far from the M5 and the A303 is a moderately easy walk with a mix of well-defined paths, tracks, and quiet lanes with outstanding views looking out over the Somerset Levels.
We’ll be meandering across farmland, meadows, bluebell strewn woods, and some quiet lanes so there will be a contrast of terrain and scenery with fine views. Be prepared as this could be muddy in some areas. We’ll also be pounding over some private land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, so best behaviour here please as we don’t want to upset HRH. We’ll also be passing through some traditional South Somerset villages and taking in the fine church at Isle Abbotts and not forgetting the magnificent Pynset Monument.
Make a note if you find yourself arriving early there is a hide about 50m from the car park which you may spot entering the car park. This hide is used by bird watchers viewing nesting heron in their habitat. Be aware from March - June there is a good chance to spot the beautiful egret, a small type of pure white heron which also chooses to nest in this same heronry at Swell Wood.
Dogs are welcome to join under control as we walk over farmland and quiet lanes. Be aware there is a strong likelihood we will encounter free roaming livestock, sheep, horses, and even deer.
NB : It will not be my intention to take our group into the RSPB reserve on Swell Wood as we will simply skirt this area, however if you have a dog and you do wish to go into the reserve area prior or after the walk then please note dogs are not allowed on the posted Woodland Walk as this is considered a special habitat for the elusive dormice, however on the Scarp Trail dogs are welcome on their lead
Photo Credits: All photos taken by the walk leader and permission is also granted to ODL for further use.
NB: The pictures supporting this walk were taken in January, and there are not any pictures of the Somerset Levels due to the levels at this time being totally flooded.

What to bring
Note that the kit list below is only a broad general guide and you will need to consider the weather forecast and specific conditions when deciding what to wear closer to the time.
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking. If the weather has been good then you may get away with good quality trainers but walking boots/shoes are recommended.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
