Join the OutdoorLads at this summertime bunkhouse weekend in Sheen !
Come and spend a chilled weekend with OutdoorLads in this stunning quiet corner of the Peak District. There are great views, lots of wildlife and a multitude of fantastic walks right from the doorstep - and a lovely courtyard in which to relax on a Summer evening!
This is a two-night hostel event from Friday 8th August to Sunday 10th August.
Converted from a gritstone barn, this is an independent, very smart and cosey bunkhouse ! It has a spacious lounge with smart TV, comfy sofas, central heating, and a spacious outdoor area with plenty of seating / tables. There is a well-equipped kitchen / dining room and good quality washing/showering facilities.
This area of the Peak District is easily reachable by public transport and offers fantastic walks with breathtaking views of the Manifold Valley and Thor’s Cave at Wetton, as well as nearby attractions like the spa town of Buxton, Hartington, and Wolfscote Dale.
Overview of the weekend:
Friday evening will involve welcoming members to the hostel and ensuring everybody is settled in properly. We will have a buffet-style dinner, and the leader will complete the hostel briefing, providing details of housekeeping and plans for the weekend. We can use this opportunity to discuss our hopes and expectations for the weekend.
After breakfast on Saturday, there will be the opportunity to take part in a walk and explore the area in more depth.
Upon our return, we will enjoy a relaxing evening meal.
Later on, we can enjoy a fun evening together. Take part in a quiz perhaps ? and enjoy a game of cards and Farkle. If you wish to bring a board game/card game etc, these would also be welcome.
On Sunday morning, we are able to enjoy a leisurely breakfast together! After we tidy up and wrap up our packing, we can take a delightful walk and have lunch nearby. For those interested, we can also pop into the charming local café for a treat!
Sleeping Arrangements: Fourteen good quality bunk beds in two dorm style rooms, with plenty of storage space. Bedding is provided. Please see 'what to bring', below.
Dogs: Unfortunately, this accommodation is not suitable for dogs.
Car Parking: Car parking is limited and some vehicles may be blocked in during the weekend. Please have a think if anybody who is coming lives nearby and car-share where possible.

What to bring
Bedding is included, but you will need to bring a towel and your own toiletries.
Please bring appropriate clothing/walking gear for the time of year. Don't forget sun lotions, hats/cap, sunglasses, flasks, water bottles etc.
If you are unsure about what to bring, or you have any specific needs, (i.e. electric points for medical devices etc.), please contact the event leader in advance.
Hostel / Walking Kit List
Although the paths on the hills themselves are relatively well-trodden we may need to cross some fields, so you will need to bring appropriate footwear.
Ear plugs / eye mask: These hostel/camping essentials can be purchased at a reasonable price from various retailers.
Additional blanket/pillow if desired.
Any medications that you may need
Boots: Hiking boots are the most essential piece of kit when hiking just about anywhere. You should make sure that your boots are both waterproof and breathable, and provide good ankle support.
Socks: Good walking socks are essential to keep the feet warm and dry, and to prevent the development of blisters. Sports socks and other socks not designed for walking may become waterlogged, or damaged, which will in turn blister your feet.
Gaiters: Gaiters attach to the bottom of walking boots and extend to just under the knee. They provide waterproofing for the bottom half of the leg, and are essential in keeping feet dry.
Walking Trousers: Walking trousers should be windproof and made of a rip stop material that will stand up to walking through ferns and undergrowth. Ideally, they should also be water resistant, or at least not gain weight, and lose their insulation properties when wet. Jeans should be avoided, as they are heavy when wet and provide no protection from the elements.
Waterproof Trousers: Waterproof trousers are essential in keeping the legs dry, as water resistant trousers will not keep out any significant rainfall. You should look for waterproof trousers that are breathable to avoid sweating too much.
Base Layer: A breathable base layer should let sweat escape from the body. This should ideally consist of a breathable synthetic, specially designed fabric, though a cotton t-shirt would suffice.
Mid Layer: A mid-layer goes on top of the base layer and ideally should be made from a 100 weight micro fleece, or a rugby jersey style thick shirt. The layering system is important as it allows walkers quickly to adapt to changes in the weather, as well as body temperature.
Outer Layer: The outer layer should consist of a windproof jacket or fleece. This is the final layer and you should ensure that this layer provides ample warmth.
Waterproof Jacket: A good waterproof jacket is one of the most important pieces of kit you will need when hiking. You should look for a jacket that is both waterproof and breathable - although not cheap, a good quality Gore-tex jacket is a sensible investment.
Hat and Gloves: a decent beanie hat and waterproof gloves are essential for walking at this time of the year.
Head Torch: It's always good to have a head torch handy when the days are shorter.
Food & drink
Please ensure your dietary requirements are up to date on your OutdoorLads profile. Please also inform the leader if you have any food allergies.

Sunday breakfast: Included in the event cost.
Tea and coffee is included in the event cost, and will be available throughout the weekend.
