Strelley Village was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. Coal mining was a significant industry in Strelley during Elizabethan and Stuart times. Horse-drawn coal wagons were driven from here to Wollaton Hall on wooden railway lines known as the Wollaton Waggonway built in 1604. During the 1960s a huge disused opencast coal mine was built over by the M1 motorway. All Saints' Church, Strelley can be seen from the motorway just north of Trowell services. Strelley Hall was originally built as a castle about 1200 AD, but the house we see today was built in the 1780s. The hall is now a business centre.
Bennerley Viaduct, known as the Iron Giant, is a former Great Northern Railway (GWR) bridge completed in 1877. The site required a lightweight design as the ground would not support a traditional masonry viaduct due to extensive coal mining. It is 18 metres (60 feet) high and 400 metres (over a quarter of a mile) long. Most of the supporting structures through the valley were demolished when the line closed in 1968. After many years of neglect and disrepair, Bennerley Viaduct re-opened to the public as part of a cycling and walking route.
At the end of the walk, we will visit the Mulberry Tree Cafe for coffee and cake, or whatever refreshments you fancy.
Dogs are welcome but owners must ensure they are kept under control at all times.
