Distance is 11.3 miles (18.2 km); total climb is 632 feet (193 m); terrain is generally good made paths and fields that are sometimes muddy.

Nestled in the Nottinghamshire countryside is Rufford Abbey Country Estate, where we begin our walk in its beautiful grounds. Walk around the top end of the lake and the wildlife is plentiful. You'll likely see goosander, tufted ducks, graylag, and mute swans at the mill end.

After this we head for the village of Wellow which boasts one of the tallest maypoles in the United Kingdom, towering an impressive 60 feet (20m)! Today, on the Spring Bank Holiday, the village will be alive with celebrations.

We continue out of the village past Wellow Dam, a man made pond used for fishing, which is said to have been created by the monks from Rufford Abbey. The village of Wellow is also unusual as it has over 40 acres of common land, second only to Southwell in Nottinghamshire as the largest acreage of common land north of Watford. Wonderful woodland is where we'll find Cocking Moor Wood.

On route back to Rufford we pass the circular earthworks around Jordan Castle Farm, once the site of a moated Norman Castle; it is believed the castle was once owned by a knight called Sir Richard Foliot, whose characteristics bore great resemblance to Robin Hood's ally, Sir Richard of the Lee, who was mentioned in many ballads and ledendary tales.

Finally, we return to the splendid site of the once Cistercian abbey, Rufford Abbey.
