This is the event page for the Ridgeway (first half) weekend event (including wild camping). The event page for the Ridgeway (second half) weekend event is also available here to allow you to complete the entire Ridgeway over two weekends.
The Route: Starting at the Avebury end of the Ridgeway in Wiltshire we will make our way East following one of the most ancient routes across the south of England and ending the weekend in Streatley.
We will cover about 70km in total - between 15km and 30km per day - starting early afternoon on the Friday. We will pass a number of historical sites including hill forts, castles, burial mounds, white horses, standing stones, racing horse gallops and the eponymous Knob Down.
More information about the Ridgeway can be found on the National Trails website: https://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/trails/the-ridgeway/
Accommodation: We will be wild camping in appropriate locations along the Ridgeway. Therefore you need suitable equipment for wild camping at this time of the year. Please contact one of the leaders if you have not wild camped before and would like to take part - we can provide thoughts based on our wild camping experiences.
EASING THE BURDEN - STRATAGEM
This event was run very successfully last year. We strategically placed vehicles at each of the camping spots which meant that you only needed to carry a day pack as the camping kit was then relayed along the route by car. Additionally there are options for pub meals in the evenings or self cater at camp.
I have created a telegram group for the event.
This will allow for ideas/advice sharing as well as answering and questions and queries etc.
Please join via the link if you can.

Thank you
Please note the following from the National Trails website: "The Ridgeway is privately owned and the Public Right of Way along it is for passage only, not for stopping and camping. However, in practice, most landowners do not object if a tent is pitched on the Trail for a night and if it disappears the next morning – as long as no litter is left, no damage done, nor camp fires lit. Please do not camp in adjoining fields, woods or gallops without prior permission from the landowner."
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.

What to bring
Please refer to Paul Ridealgh's excellent publication on wild camping equipment which can be found under "My first OutdoorLads wild camping event" on the OutdoorLads website in "About Us", "My First Event". Please contact one of the leaders if you are not an experienced wild camper and need advice on what to bring. You should be prepared for all potential weather conditions based on the time of year.
Food & drink
There will be some limited opportunities to buy food and drink in villages along the way. Further details about such opportunities will be sent out in a pre-event message. Participants are currently advised to bring sufficient food for the duration of the event and water for the first 24 hours (e.g. 2-3 litres).
