The Range of the Awful Hand is a string of 11 peaks in the Galloway Forest Park running from South Ayrshire in the north to Glen Trool in the south, so-named as it resembles the fingers of a hand.

This walk will take in no less than seven of its highest peaks, including four Donalds (hills over 2,000ft in the Scottish Southern Uplands), two of which are also Corbetts (hills over 2,500ft): -

After a quick car shuttle, we'll traverse the ridge from north to south, including the following peaks: -

  • Caerloch Dhu (659m)
  • Shalloch on Minnoch (768m)
  • Tarfessock (696m)
  • Tarfessock South Top (620m)
  • Kirriereoch Hill (786m)
  • Merrick (843m)
  • Benyellary (719m)

A map of the proposed route can be found here.

The terrain is a mix of grassy slopes and craggy cols and is generally suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness. We start at a height of around 400m and finish at around 125m with relatively small drops (generally 200m or less) between the peaks.

Dogs: The walk is suitable for dogs, which must be kept under control at all times, particularly near livestock

Photos: The photos were taken by the leader on a recce of the walk carried out in March 2022 and on a previous walk in April 2019.
