Join Ian on this circular walk around 9 miles taking in canals and former railways.

The walk will start on the High Peak Trail. From the carpark we’ll walk up onto Black Rocks for stunning views towards Cromford Mills & Matlock. After descending Black Rocks it’s a steep but gradual descent down to High Peak Junction, the River Derwent and the Cromford Canal. We'll pass the Leawood Pumphouse which was built in 1849 to pump water from the River Derwent into Cromford Canal.

It is now well over 150 years old but remains in pristine working condition thanks to the dedication of the Middleton Top and Leawood Pump Volunteer Group - We may see the steam engine in operation as theirs an open day being held on this date.

We continue along the canal and a visit to Lea Wood to see the Bluebells that carpet the woodland. From the High Peak Trail we’ll head towards Bolehill & Wirksworth, weaving our way through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside & back to the carpark at Black Rocks

The High Peak Trail follows the route of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway. This was one of the world's first long-distance railway lines, built between 1825 and 1830. Many important railway buildings and features can still be seen, including High Peak Junction Workshops, Middleton Top Engine House, Hopton Tunnel and Hopton Incline.

In all there is around 480m of ascent, and some steep ascent/descents. The main descent is on the old railway though, which is a steady steep gradient.

Including stops for lunch, snack stops, photos etc, it should take us around 6 hours.
