Peak District Multi-Activity Weekend 2022: Outdoor Climbing
7 people attending
1 place left
Come and join OutdoorLads for a days Rock Climbing at Birchen Edge as part of the Peak District Multi-Activity Hostel Weekend 2022. However, you are welcome to attend even if you are not staying at the hostel.
Unlike in Traditional (Trad) climbing, the routes for Sports Climbing already have bolted protection fixed to the rock. Once you've clipped in a Quick Draw, you clip your rope in the same way that you would on a lead climb at an indoor wall. This makes it an ideal way to transition to climbing outdoors from indoors.
And Horseshoe Quarry is an ideal venue for your introduction to Outdoor Climbing, with over 300 routes over 12 walls, ranging in height from 6 to 35m, with Sports Grades ranging from 3+ to 7b (but be warned these grades are a little harder than on an indoor wall!!).
This event is ideally aimed at climbers who can climb competently on lead indoors (or out!!), although we will try to cater for less experienced climbers too depending.

IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
COVID-19 – IMPORTANT, Please read the following before you sign up to this event:
- Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, even if they are extremely mild, or who lives or is in a support bubble with someone showing symptoms, is asked not to attend. This is in line with the government’s coronavirus advice.
- You must also immediately self-isolate and not attend the event if you or someone in your household or support bubble shows coronavirus symptoms or tests positive. Read the NHS self-isolation guidance.
- OutdoorLads strongly encourages all attendees to take a rapid lateral flow test immediately prior to attending an event. This will help to keep everyone safe. Order free Rapid Lateral Flow Tests.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not experts, do not need to be experts, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as experts, but are amateurs with some experience in the event type and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
By signing up to and attending an OutdoorLads event, you are confirming that you have read, understood and accept the content of this statement.
Members should also understand that rock climbing is weather dependant – more so than some other outdoor activities (not least as it can be dangerous to climb on wet rock). Whilst we will do everything reasonably possible to run the event as described, the event leader may need to change the location and/or other event details to best suit the anticipated weather. We will advise members booked on, or interested, in the event of this as soon as is practical, but you should understood that in certain circumstances it may be necessary to move the event to an indoor climbing centre, or cancel the event all together.
Please see our website for more information including an FAQ about our events.

What to bring
What to Wear
Bring clothes suitable for spending a full day outdoors, which should include wind & waterproofs, and a few layers that will allow you to be comfortable whilst climbing as well as between climbs (Outdoor climbing can mean a lot of standing around waiting). Also wear boots or trainers for the walk up to the crag.
Climbing Gear
If you have it - please bring your own climbing gear, including: helmet, harness, rock shoes, chalk-bag, Belay plate and screw-gate karabiner. If you have rope(s) and rack then please bring them along too - but please make sure it is in good condition.
If you don't have climbing gear, please message the event leader when booking and we will aim to provide what kit we can - but unfortunately we can't provide climbing shoes.
Food & drink
You will need a packed lunch and enough drinks and any snacks to last you the day as we will spend the full day at the crag - and there are no food or refreshment close to the crag.
