We will be walking!

Come with us off the north end of the British mainland to explore the archipelago of Orkney.

We are staying on Orkney for four nights to get out more and discover the islands that make up Orkney - these islands are perhaps the best location around to see prehistoric remains, with the oldest building in the world located on the island of Papa Westray, at a staggering 5600 years old! But there's much more to see with Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness on the 'mainland' forming part of a UNESCO World heritage site.

We are staying at a hostel in Birsay, in the NW part of the mainland, which has the Earl's palace nearby and at low tide a causeway leads across to the Brough of Birsay which has a Pictish and Norse settlement remains along with a celtic monastery - so there's no shortage of stuff to see!

During our stay we will have the use of a minibus (included in the event price) which will allow us to get around the islands, with a visit to Hoy possible as there is an easy walk across the island to see the Old Man of Hoy - a 137m high sea stack, and we could continue a couple of kilometres north to St John's Head, which is the highest sea cliff in the UK at 335m, perhaps just for those with a head for heights. If that's too dizzying you could go and have a look around the Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners of war.

Travel: Travel to the Orkneys is not included in the price, you will need to make your own arrangements. Lifts in the Minibus on the 21st August may be available from Edinburgh (around 7am) and Inverness (around 10am) - please contact the event leader to discuss, as places are limited to the number of seats on the bus! There would be an additional £40 return additional payable for the ferry crossing, which OutdoorLads would invoice you for. Otherwise you would need to make your own arrangements for passage to Orkney - the ferry is £40 return for a foot passenger and is bookable with Pentland Ferries.
