A touristy day walk where we'll follow the waymarked trails through the internationally rare and protected vegetated shingle, salt-marsh, mud-flats and brackish lagoons of Orford Ness nature reserve.

The Red Route walk route
Once we're on Orford Ness we'll follow the pre-designated red route which is about 5 miles (8km) Perfect for a walk leader as all I have to do is follow some signs although I may bring an OS map and compass just to look important - haha!
The red route is mainly on tarmac roads so if you were new to ODL and don't have walking boots or shoes yet, trainers would be fine.
The route passes through the site of the WWI airfield , now home to marshland birds, then crosses Stony Ditch on the Bailey Bridge to the vegetated shingle habitats, the lighthouse and beach where some paths are shingle and uneven.
This route also gives access to all the eery buildings you can look inside, including Bomb Ballistics, Black Beacon and Laboratory 1 of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE)
What to bring
Please bring appropriate clothing on the day depending on the weather conditions.
Food & drink
As we are a smaller group I will look to see if there is a local pub nearby we can go after our walk.
However if this fails we can always rely on the good old packed lunch.
