The first in a series of semi-urban weekend walks that start and finish at Metrolink tram stops across Greater Manchester. There are two walks each weekend - one on Saturday and one on Sunday. A Metrolink weekend ticket costs just £5.80 and gives unlimited access to the whole tram network from 6.00 pm on Friday until last tram on Sunday.
On this walk we'll be walking from Sale to Altrincham, via the Bridgewater Canal and Dunham Massey.
Considered the first true canal in England, the Bridgewater Canal runs from Runcorn to Leigh and is built on one level, avoiding the need for locks. It's not part of the Canal and River Trust network, but is owned and operated by the Bridgewater Canal Company Ltd - part of the Peel Group. Originally built to transport coal, it is now a leisure waterway. We'll start our walk at Dane Road, just south of the M60 motorway, and follow the canal towpath south west, through Sale, towards Dunham Massey.
Dunham Massey Hall is set in over 300 acres of parkland, including a deer park. The estate also includes many ancient trees. Dating form the 1730s, the National Trust have owned and operated the Hall and parkland since 1976. We'll be walking through the grounds on our way to Altrincham.
In Altrincham, we'll have time for a drink in a local pub, before jumping on a tram back to Manchester.
Why not also sign up for Sunday's walk, from Heywood to Failsworth?

What to bring
While most of the walk is on good paths, there will be muddy sections, so boots are recommended. It's Manchester, so waterproofs, too!
Food & drink
You should bring a packed lunch and at least a litre of water. The canal path passes close to a number of shops, near the start of the walk, so there will be chance to grab something if you forget. We'll also pass some pubs...
