This is stage 1 of 20 on the Greater Manchester Ringway, a 200 mile (322km) walking trail exploring all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester. You can find out more about it here.
We start our journey in the bustling city centre weaving past historic buildings. Then, we'll dive into the industrial past of Castlefield, where canals and warehouses whisper tales of Manchester's industrial might. As we venture further, the urban landscape gives way to the serene beauty of Longford Park and Turn Moss, a haven of greenery perfect for a leisurely stroll.
The trail continues along the Trans Pennine Trail, offering a glimpse into the countryside before following the rushing waters of the River Mersey to our final destination. It's a fantastic way to explore the diverse landscapes of Greater Manchester, all while getting some fresh air and exercise.
This is a linear walk. You can leave us once we've finished, or return via tram to the starting point. A single journey ticket costs £3.80.
Well-behaved, socialised and under-control dogs are welcome on this event.
Dogs must be kept on a lead whenever this is signposted and whenever we are in the vicinity of livestock, and at the event leader's request. It's a good idea to check what the route may be like with the event leader before booking to find out more about the potential suitability of the walk for dogs.

IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.

What to bring
Water: bring plenty of water (~2 Litres)
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Footwear: ideally designed for hiking, sturdy trail runners are OK too.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproofs: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch
Food & drink
Please bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water. We'll also stop at the following locations where you can buy refreshments:
Cafe Football
At around the 4.5km mark next to the Old Trafford football ground, we'll make a short stop where you can buy takeaway drinks and use the facilities if required.
Caffeine and Co
In Longford Park at around 8.5km, we'll stop for a packed lunch. The cafe here also serves food but there are reports of long waits so may not be suitable as we'll need to get on.
