Join me and lots of other folk for a 5km run at West Park Leisure Centre, Long Eaton, Nottingham.
'parkrun' is weekly event that takes place every Saturday at locations across the UK. You can run, walk or jog the 5k at your own pace. I've been park running for a number years and enjoy the positive, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere created at these events. These events are a great way to motivate you to get up and active on a Saturday morning. There is no time limit and no one finishes last. The "Couch to 5k" app can be really useful as you develop your 5k runs.
This event precedes a wonderfully tranquil walk around Attenborough Nature Reserve, led by the charismatic Lewis (Lewis84). The parking for the walk is about a 10 minute drive from the parkrun parking, please bear this in mind if you are planning on taking part in both events.
We will meet at 8:40am in the park near the start line in the vicinity of the Rugby Club and Cricket Pavilion (I'll be wearing a OutdoorLads hoodie) where you can listen to the parkrun briefing and route for this parkrun before the run starts at 9:00am prompt. You can register for parkrun and get your own barcode from www.parkrun.org.uk to scan at the end of your run to record your finish time if you wish, However you do not need to do this to take part in the run if you don't want to.
Course Description: A flat, well signed two clockwise lap course within the grounds of West Park. From the start participants head along a straight path towards the leisure centre for 250m, turning right and then left before following the combined cycle and pedestrian path (clearly separated by a large white line and signage) around the perimeter of the park. On approach to the tennis centre the path curves right before a turn left and cross over a wide bridge turn immediately left then right to follow the path around the perimeter with the tennis centre on the right following the perimeter of the park. On approach to the children’s play area, turn right then left to follow the path between the tennis centre and play area. On reaching the bridge, turn left crossing over it then turn left again and follow the path back to the start for the second lap. On approach to the start area towards the end of the second lap parkrunners will be directed right to the finish line..
Post run drink: Time permitting, a post run cuppa and breakfast cob can be purchased from the Rugby House Cafe, situated behind the start line - at the very reasonable price of £3.50.

What to bring
Consider the weather ahead of setting off for your park run. It is important that you stay cool when running so try to pick lightweight clothing. Materials like polyester and nylon are perfect for the warmer months and wool is better suited for the winter. You don't need to invest in expensive running gear t-shirt and shorts, leggings will be fine, as well as a warm jumper for when you finish.
It might seem obvious, but running shoes are specifically designed for running, so you should wear them when you running if you have some. Trainers will be fine but wont provide as good cushioning or comfort.
Food & drink
I would suggest bringing a drink of water to rehydrate after your run, and you may wish to bring a snack bar or banana.
