NEW DATE (Originally 21st October)
A leisurely social bike ride suitable for any bike circling the perimeter of Manchester Airport. using a mixture of bridleways, quiet lanes and dedicated cycle paths.
We will start at Quarry Bank Mill, an imposing industrial heritage site managed by the National Trust, situated to the south of the airport, after viewing the Mill we will pass close to the 2nd runway on a bridle path where we may have a chance to view the Emirates A380 landing, before heading close to the terminals and onto the Aviation Viewing Park where refreshments can be taken at the cafe/takeaway whilst observing aircraft movements.
After lunch we will head out on lanes into the Cheshire countryside before taking an interesting route on tracks between the 2 runways to the Bollin Tunnel passing under the 2nd runway and another visit to the perimeter fence by the 2nd runway with the aim to view the A380 taking off at close quarters. Off course no guarantees on what we can view, as runway use varies with wind direction and punctuality of flights is quite varied.
Then just a short ride back to Styal Village.
We have plenty of time to complete the route and we will take it at a relaxed pace and no one will be left behind.
Road cyclists: Please be aware some paths might be a little rough and bumpy for thin tyres, but doable none the less. and given the time of the year, some sections of mud/water can be expected on the trails.
Mountain bikers: The majority of the route will be on paved surfacing, so knobbly tyres will be a little over kill for the ride, but don't worry it will be at a slow pace.
Pace and Terrain
This will be a leisurely cycle suitable for those of all levels of fitness. The majority of the route is on quiet rural lanes, dedicated cycleways and off road section of bridleways and paths. This event is open to cyclists of all abilities and bike types. There will be several short climbs as we cross the River Bollin Valley several times, but the climbs are short and can be walked in a few minutes.
If you're not a regular cyclist, please do make sure your bike is in good condition - check the tyres are well inflated, chain is oiled, and you've got a spare inner tube, drinks and snacks with you.
