Leisure Cycle Leeds to Saltaire
4 people attending
6 places left
A leisurely social bike ride from Leeds to Saltaire along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Total distance around 28 miles.
The route will be mostly towpaths, with two roads that have limited traffic, and will be mostly flat. There are likely to be walkers and dogs along the towpath, so it's worth making sure your bike has a bell. We'll have plenty of time to complete the route and will take it at a relaxed pace so no one will be left behind.
Beginning outside the DoubleTree Hilton, Granary Wharf we will follow the traffic-free towpath along the canal. We will cycle past several historic and interesting sites including Leeds Industrial Museum, Kirkstall Abbey, Bramley Falls, Rodley Nature Reserve, the river Aire and finally, the UNESCO world heritage site of Saltaire, where we will stop for lunch. There will be an opportunity to purchase food and drinks at the Half Moon Cafe.
Terrain
Tarmac (some with tree roots - so you need to be careful), tar and chip and limestone.
Pace
This will be a leisurely cycle suitable for those of all levels of fitness and bike types. The majority of the route is off-road on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal towpath. If you're not a regular cyclist, please make sure your bike is in good condition - check the tyres are well inflated, chain is oiled, and you've got a spare inner tube.
