Kinver and Dick Whittington

If you’re not on a Christmas hostel this weekend, get ready for Christmas by coming to see the manor house where Dick Whittington came from. This is now a pub in the hamlet of Whittington, by Kinver, just outside Stourbridge. A plaque tells the story. Dick came out here and went up, to London.
Our walk takes in the Sandstone Kinver Edge, with fine woodlands and views across the open countryside East and West. We pass the rock houses, now open under the National Trust. People lived in the rock until the middle of the twentieth-century: even electricity and cookers were installed in some!
The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal links the walk together with its cuttings through the sandstone and horse shelters in the rock, one of the oldest canals in the Midlands.
The walk starts and end at The Manor House Inn. The Inn opens at midday and are happy for us to park there earlier and come in for a drink or food in the afternoon. If you do not want to use the Inn, there is free parking in residential areas of Kinver, especially on Redwood Rd, DY7 6JF. Please Park considerately. This is about 1km or 15 minutes’ walk from the Inn and we shall pass it on the way back to the Inn at the end of the walk.
Of course, the walk will not be complete without a few gay jokes about Dick (Whittington)!
