We start our walk in the picturesque village of Hayfield and first ascend to the stunning Kinder Reservoir. Kinder Scout and the surrounding area has been the scene of many air crashes on the long approach to Manchester Airport. From the reservoir we follow the steep River Kinder valley up to Kinder Downfall passing by Mermaids Pool. Kinder Downfall is the highest waterfall in the county, formed where the river Kinder meets the edge of the moorland plateaux. Far below the downfall, the dark waters of Mermaids Pool are reputedly haunted by a water spirit who manifests on the Eve of Easter, perhaps relating to a time of ancient worship in the area. In order to reach the Kinder plateau we need to scramble up the side.
Please note this is a very difficult walk and is not one of the standard ascents of Kinder Scout. You absolutely need a good head for heights, confidence in scrambling, and be able to cope with rapid steep ascents. You should also be prepared for very cold weather and low visibility.
If the weather is too poor in Hayfield or at any point in our ascent, we will adjust the walk appropriately.
Kinder Scout and the surrounding area has been the scene of many air crashes. Two sabre jets crashed in unexplained circumstances in July 1954 the wreckage can still be seen, GR 072902.
Please note: The area can be treacherous in poor weather, low cloud can reduce visibility within minutes. Good clothing is essential.
