Ironbridge Outstanding British Walk - 12km
21 people attending
4 places left
This event is intended for attendees of Halloween 2022.
The route is Walk 41 from "Ordnance Survey - 100 Outstanding British Walks". Must be good?
Its an undulating loop, mostly on former railways lines passing many of the valley's historical features and museums including
- Ironbridge, the world's first iron bridge. Crossing the River Severn, it was completed in 1779 and opened to traffic in 1781.
- Coalport China - a manufacturer of fine English chinaware which was based on the site between 1795 and 1926.
- Abraham Darby's Iron Works where iron was first smelted with coke in 1709
The route passes multiple pubs towards the end which we may sample.
The route is viewable here. We will be going in reverse to end up at the pubs and bridge at the end of the walk.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 30 plus litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: Waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking. NOT suitable for trainers.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: No jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Waterproof Trousers
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunscreen in Spring and Summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
A good idea is to bring a change of clothing if the weather is cold and wet to change into for the ride home.
Please refer to the ODL Kit List Guidelines for further information
Food & drink
Bring drinks and snacks. We may have time for a pub lunch, but totally depends on our pace and how busy the pub is, so bring enough food and nibbles just in case. We finish in ironbridge so may end up with a short pub crawl on the way back to the hostel.
