INDOOR CLIMBING @ Parthian Climbing, Manchester
This event is intended as a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community; everyone will be warmly welcomed
Our indoor climbing events offer a fantastic way to get fit, have fun, and challenge yourself in a supportive and social environment. Whether you're a seasoned climber or completely new to the sport, our sessions cater to all levels of experience.
Set in the former St. Benedict's Church, Parthian Climbing Centre boasts over 195 roped routes, auto-belays, and two dedicated bouldering areas. With a variety of grades and styles crafted by some of the UK's best route setters, it offers a wealth of interesting climbing options for climbers of all abilities.
Those familiar to climbing will already know that climbing is a full-body workout that engages muscles you never knew you had, helping to improve your strength whilst improving your balance and coordination. However climbing is more than just a physical activity - it’s a great opportunity to socialise with other members making long lasting friendships with like minded people.
New to climbing?
No problem! Our sessions are open to all abilities. If you're new or out of practice, we'll provide a supervised session to help you climb safely and confidently. Please contact the leader in advance to book a supervised session, as spaces are limited.
Experienced climbers
To climb unsupervised, you'll need to demonstrate basic climbing skills, including:
- Fitting a harness correctly
- Tying in with the correct knots
- Belaying and lowering another climber
- Answering safety questions
If you're unsure about any of these, opt for a supervised session – we'll help you find routes that match your ability whilst you refresh your skills.
Ready to climb?
- Sign up! Please register via the event page so the event leader can look out for you.
- If you are new to the climbing centre, complete their waiver in advance to save time on the day. You only need to do this once.
- You’ll need to pay the centre’s entry fee directly (found here) on arrival directly to the centre (ODL Members receive a concessionary rate discount)
- We’ll be waiting in the reception area so come join us. If you are running late, don’t worry, we’ll be in the climbing area so let us know when you arrive and we’ll get you set up.
Helpful resources
If you want to practice your knots before climbing here are some useful videos on YouTube (not made by ODL) for:

how to belay
Any questions?
Please feel free to contact the leader directly if you have any questions. The best way to do this is to message the leader directly rather than leaving a message on the event.

IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
All those attending the event must also be aware of the centre's own terms and conditions of participation and abide by them, along with any instructions given by the centre’s staff. Everyone must also take responsibility for their own safety while participating in Indoor climbing events.
What to bring
Climbing Equipment: If you have your own climbing gear (harness, shoes, chalk, Belay device & screw-gate karabiner, climbing rope etc.) you can bring this along, but please make sure it is in good condition. As a minimum you will need the use of a climbing harness and a belay device (plate & screw-gate karabiner, or assisted breaking device if you have one).
If you do not have your own, you will be able to borrow ours (subject to availability) or hire what you need directly from the centre.
There is a changing area at the Climbing Centre and lockers are available, although you will need to provide your own padlock to secure it.
What to Wear: It is best to wear either shorts, combats or tracksuit bottoms. No jeans or any form of trouser which hampers movement. A t-shirt or vest is also suitable. If you have any OutdoorLads branded clothing then please try and wear this as it will give the group a good level of visibility. Any jewellery such as rings, watches, chains or bangles should be removed before beginning the session to prevent injury.
Climbing centres can be quite dusty due to the use of climber's chalk so please make sure you bring your inhaler/medication if needed.
Food & drink
The Climbing centre cafe sells a selection of snacks, cakes, hot & cold drinks.
We usually head to the Molly House (just off Canal Street) for a quick drink afterwards too (but there's no expectation - most of us have to work the next day!)
