Around 10 miles in distance, a good level of fitness required, with various ascents of 520m and matching descents also of 520m. Terrain is woodland trails, moorland, farmland, and road. Beware to expect muddy conditions if the weather has been wet.

Set out on an invigorating 10-mile springtime ramble through the heart of Exmoor National Park, taking in picturesque Winsford, the legendary Punchbowl, and the ancient Tarr Steps. Winsford, with its eight charming bridges and historic ford, serves as our starting point. From here, we’ll venture into a world of contrasts—tranquil woodland, rolling farmland, and expansive moorland.

Midway through the walk, we’ll reach the iconic Tarr Steps, a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch by the river. Afterward, the route follows the meandering River Barle, offering serene riverside views before climbing back onto the moor. Here, we’ll explore the dramatic Punchbowl, a geological wonder steeped in legend and shaped either by glacial action or the devil’s mischief (you decide!). If the weather conditions are fair at the Punchbowl then you will be able to appreciate in it's full glory, and magnificence.

As we descend back to Winsford, we’ll complete our adventure with a well-earned stop at the village pub, where refreshing drinks await. Whether you come for the legends, the landscapes, or the camaraderie, this walk promises to be a memorable celebration of spring in Exmoor.

Don't waste that space!

Spring and Summer walks mean lots of new and existing members excited to be getting out more. Please only book if you know you can make it. Should your plans change please free up the space immediately for someone else who could attend.

Is it dog friendly?

Dogs are welcome to join us on this event but we do ask the following:
Please appreciate the fact that not everyone is a dog owner or lover- especially when we stop to eat
Remember we will encounter livestock and horses, and land owners and authorities have clearly signposted  their expectation of the integrity and assurity they require  of any dog owner, and their dog whilst on their farm land.
