Join me and lots of other folk, and start the New Year with a 5km run at Gedling Country Park, Mapperley, Nottingham.
'parkrun' is weekly event that takes place every Saturday at locations across the UK. You can run, walk or jog the 5k at your own pace. I've been park running for a number years and enjoy the positive, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere created at these events. These events are a great way to motivate you to get up and active on a Saturday morning. There is no time limit and no one finishes last. The "Couch to 5k" app can be really useful as you develop your 5k runs.
We will meet at 8:40am in the park near the start line in the vicinity of the Dynamo House (I'll be wearing a OutdoorLads hoodie) where you can listen to the parkrun briefing and route for this parkrun before the run starts at 9:00am prompt. You can register for parkrun and get your own barcode from www.parkrun.org.uk to scan at the end of your run to record your finish time if you wish, However you do not need to do this to take part in the run if you don't want to.
Course Description: An undulating single lap figure of eight course set in the grounds of Gedling Country Park. The course is clearly marked with directional arrows.
The start is located close to the Spring Lane car park. From the start runners head East for 300 metres before turning right at a junction of paths, adjacent to the finish area, and heading in a Southerly direction downhill across the park. After approx. another 300 metres runners then turn left at the next junction of paths to begin the climb up Wicketwood Hill and then run in an anti-clockwise direction around the solar farm. Once runners return to the downhill path next to the finish area, they turn left to follow it again downhill across the park for approx. 300 metres. This time at the junction runners turn right and then take the third turning on the left to follow the ‘main bright’ route clockwise up and round back past the start point and head straight on to the finish.
Post run drink: Join us at Cafe 1899 which is located close to the children's play area, for a post run cuppa.

What to bring
Consider the weather ahead of setting off for your park run. It is important that you stay cool when running so try to pick lightweight clothing. Materials like polyester and nylon are perfect for the warmer months and wool is better suited for the winter. You don't need to invest in expensive running gear t-shirt and shorts, leggings will be fine, as well as a warm jumper for when you finish.
It might seem obvious, but running shoes are specifically designed for running, so you should wear them when you running if you have some. Trainers will be fine but wont provide as good cushioning or comfort.
Food & drink
I would suggest bringing a drink of water to rehydrate after your run, and you may wish to bring a snack bar or banana.
