Forest of Dean by Night
9 people attending
3 places left
The Forest of Dean is home to all kinds of wildlife, from wild boar, deer and badgers through to the bats & owls that that can be heard throughout the night and if we are really lucky we'll come across some of them.
This night time forest walk starting from the village of Parkend, takes in the miners monument at New Fancy View where if the sky is clear we should get some wonderful views of the night sky. We'll then follow woodland paths to the Cyril Hart Arboretum and then loop back round to Cannop Ponds and return to the village.
We'll be pausing for a late night supper (packed lunch at some point during the night and be warned good quality walking boots will be needed for this walk which although will follow well made forest paths may be muddy in places.
Unfortunately as the walk is at night it will NOT be suitable for dogs

What to bring
Red Light Torch: Since we will be walking at night please bring with you a red light head torch. Hopefully we will not need it for most of the evening.
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking NOT trainers. The ground will be wet and muddy
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of

Food & drink
A packed lunch (supper) and plenty to drink will be essential on this walk. At this time in the night there will be no chances to buy provisions on route.
