Join us for an evening of culture at Victoria Hall, with the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra, featuring our very own Andy Ling on the viola.
Isle of the dead - Rachmaninov, was written in 1909 based on a reproduction of a black and white painting by Arnold Böcklin. Depicting themes of how life and death are intertwined using time signatures representing heavy breathing, the music uses fragments of the Dies irae (the ancient Latin chant of the dead) throughout and takes you through a dramatic journey.
Shostakovich Symphony No. 7, nicknamed the Leningrad Symphony was written in 1947, with inspiration provided by the destruction of Leningrad by Stalin. The music is all about the terror, slavery and bondage of spirit, representing a struggle against fascism. Opening with innocence, the symphony climaxes ominously into a terrific distortion, later ending with the opening theme, representing a gesture of defiance and heroism in the face of adversity.
Tickets are available online or can be purchased on the door. There is a £3 discount if you book before October 31st. Concession rates are available for students and 'unwaged'.
We will go for a drink at a nearby pub after the concert.
