Join us for a leisurely walk along the stunning Exe estuary, as we explore the charming villages of Topsham, Exton, and Lympstone. This relaxed ramble is a perfect way to enjoy the beauty of the South Devon countryside with like-minded friends.
We’ll kick off our walk just south of Exeter, heading towards Exmouth. Our route will follow the estuary, meandering alongside the railway line for most of the journey. As we stroll, we’ll pass various pubs and tea rooms—perfect spots for a break if the group fancies a refreshment as the mood takes us.
A highlight of our walk is the picturesque view near the Lympstone Commando Marine Base. It’s the ideal place to pause and soak in the scenic estuary views.
Upon reaching Exmouth, we’ll treat ourselves to a visit to Krispies, the award-winning fish and chip shop renowned for its unique battered chips. If you haven't tried them yet, you're in for a delicious surprise! Of course, they also serve traditional fish and chips for those who may prefer a more classic option.
After our meal, we’ll catch the train back from Exmouth to Newcourt, a quick 15-minute journey costing around £4. This same train continues to Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids, making it easy to return home.
The walk covers approximately 8 miles including stops for tea, coffee, and those mouth-watering chips. With trains departing Exmouth roughly every half hour, you can enjoy a relaxed return at your own pace, or further explore Exmouth or head for the beach the choice is yours.
DOGS: Well-trained and quiet dogs are more than welcome to join us, provided they remain under control as we traverse tarmac tracks, and quiet lanes. Authorities have placed signage in certain areas, clearly indicating where dogs must be leashed.

What to bring
Note that the kit list below is only a broad general guide and you will need to consider the weather forecast and specific conditions when deciding what to wear closer to the time.
Water: Without fail bring at least two litres of water
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable boots and designed for hiking. Walking boots/shoes are highly recommended for this walk as we will be covering uneven surfaces, bridle tracks and moorland. If it has rained then it will be muddy in certain areas
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally NO jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses & Suntan Lotion: for any sunny day, even in winter
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch
Food & drink
We'll stop for a lunch break stop and it's your choice if you wish to bring a packed lunch, don't forget your snacks, and plenty of water to remain hydrated. We will be stopping along the route though we'll piece together where we stop, so this could be a pub or cafe we'll go with the flow and I'l get the consensus on the day from the group.
