Embark on our walk as we traverse a delightful circular route, starting with an ascent along the ridges to the breathtaking Beacon Hill. Descending through enchanting combes, we seamlessly merge with the Coleridge Way, guiding us toward the charming village of Holford. The trail then leads us through the captivating Hodder’s Combe, and onward ascending to the scenic Higher Hare Knapp.
Marvel at the stunning views from the hilltops, extending across the Bristol Channel with glimpses of the South Wales coastline. Casting our gaze westward, the panorama unfolds over Exmoor, offering more expansive views of Somerset and beyond. This walk not only showcases the exceptional landscape of the Quantock Hills but also introduces a delightful contrast as we descend into sheltered woodland combes nestled in the valleys, accompanied by the soothing sounds of meandering streams.
This moderately challenging circular route boasts a few gentle ascents and descents, making it accessible to a wide range of hikers. The terrain features a mix of uneven stony tracks, moorland expanses, quiet lanes, and well-trodden trails. Negotiating the route is a breeze with only two gates to pass through, no stiles, and the only exhilarating challenge being a few stream jumps. Sturdy walking boots are highly recommended for the day, ensuring comfort and stability.
Along the way, discover captivating highlights such as the hills along the Macmillan Way, the descent to the Coleridge Way, the serene Alfoxton Wood, and the iconic yet slightly weathered Alfoxton Park House. This historic residence was once the home of the esteemed William and Dorothy Wordsworth, who chose this abode to be near their friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It was within these walls that the collaborative masterpiece, "Lyrical Ballads," was penned and published in 1798. This groundbreaking work is heralded as the genesis of the English Romantic Movement, forever altering the course of English literature and poetry. Join us on this exploration as we tread the paths of literary legends and immerse ourselves in the captivating beauty that inspired their enduring words.
Dogs are welcome to join under control as we walk along moorland, woodland, tracks, and some very quiet lanes. Be aware we will encounter free roaming sheep, horses, squirrels, and deer. There is signage from the Quantock Hill authority indicating clearly areas where owners are asked to put their dogs on leads.
