Join Ian on this scenic walk along Derwent Edge & Ladybower/Derwent Reservoirs.

Derwent Reservoir was used as a practice run for the famous Dambuster’s bouncing bombs, and that is where we will start this scenic hike. We have an easy start, allowing us the take in the great views of the reservoir & the impressive Derwent Dam, following the footpath alongside the reservoir towards Howden Dam, before we head upwards along a hidden valley towards the open moorland and onto Derwent Edge.

On arriving at our first summit Lost Lad cairn we get to see the start of some amazing views down towards the reservoirs and the surrounding peaks. It's then a short walk to Back Tor where, if you’re feeling brave, there is a scramble up to the trig point.

Following the flagged path, we pass some unique & strange rock formations: the Salt Cellar, the Coach and Horses, and some other odd rock formations. From Derwent Edge we then head downhill towards Ladybower, where we’ll pass Derwent Village – which was intentionally flooded when the reservoir was filled. From here it’s a short walk back to the carpark.

This is a moderate level walk & a good level of fitness is required.

Total ascent of this walk is 1702ft and descent 1708ft  and involves a gradual steep ascent up onto Derwent Edge
