Derby - Bonnie Prince Charlie Ale Trail

The focus of this themed leisure walk is lunch and real ale, or whatever you prefer to drink. We will visit several pubs around Derby city centre and have lunch at The Exeter Arms pub.
Every December, Bonnie Prince Charlie is remembered in Derbyshire, as Swarkestone Bridge near Derby was the most southerly point reached by his invading army in 1745. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, as he was also known, was rightful heir to the throne by birth but disbarred from the succession owing to his catholicism. His Jacobite rebellion ended at the Battle of Culloden, the last battle on British soil, in April 1746.
The origins of the Ordnance Survey lie in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745 when Prince William, Duke of Cumberland realised that the British Army did not have a good map of the Scottish Highlands to locate Jacobite dissenters, so that they could be put on trial.
On the first weekend of December, re-enactors take part in parades, wreath laying and recreations of battle because Prince Charlie was in Derby on 4 December 1745. Expect actors dressed in period costume, pipe bands and wreath laying at the Bonnie Prince Charlie statue, living history encampments and skirmishes with musket firepower!
En route, we will also visit the area of Derby named Little Chester that was the Roman settlement of Deventio occupied for 40 years until around 120AD.
Please note: the purpose of this leisure walk is Sunday lunch, and we will allow up to one-and-a-half hours to dine. If you do not wish to eat a pub lunch, please do not book onto the event. To secure a dining place at The Exeter Arms pub you will have to pay £10 deposit (per person) to the pub directly, and choose food from one of the menus in advance. Dining space is limited, so seats will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. Event booking will close on 13 November, three weeks beforehand. See the Food & Drink section for more information.
