A Day of Climbing in Portland - Sunday (Beginners Welcome)
14 people attending
0 places left
Join Stu and David on the stunning island of Portland for some adrenaline-pumping sport climbing! This is a fantastic opportunity to get out on the famous limestone cliffs overlooking the English Channel. Whether you're a seasoned sport climber or have been leading indoors and want to venture on to some real rock, this event is perfect for you.
For those who haven't done sport climbing before, there will be a quick tutorial session at the start of the event, you just need to be competent at tying in, top rope belaying and have a pair of climbing shoes. If you've done three or more indoor climbing events in recent history, that's about all the experience you need. If you are unsure about the difficulty of the event, or whether you have necessary skills & experience, please message the event leader.
On this day, we will explore some of the best climbing areas that Portland has to offer. There will be a range of grades available to cater to all levels of experience, so if you haven't climbed outdoors before, just let the organiser know when you sign up so we can make sure we have a good mix of experiences.
The event is part of an Outdoorlads hostel weekend, with some members taking part in a walking event. After the day's climbing, we will return to the Bunker Hostel for a well-deserved rest and enjoy a friendly and sociable evening. Make sure that if you'd like to stay in the hostel, you book the hostel event separately here.
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.

What to bring
You must bring your own climbing shoes, helmet and harness. We may be able to lend helmets and harnesses if you message the leader well in advance of the event (2 weeks minimum).
If you have a rope (50m single rope is best), a sling, screw gate, belay plate and any other relevant sport climbing gear, please do bring these too, but be sure to check your equipment if it's your first outing for a while.
Appropriate warm, preferably windproof, clothing will be needed. A waterproof jacket should also be bought in case of rain. If the weather is too wet/inclement, we won't be climbing outdoors and will find an alternative indoor climbing centre, and notify people booked onto the event via the messages feature.
Sun lotion is best applied before leaving home, to avoid greasy hands on the crag.
It can be advisable to use insect repellent to help ward off the midges (but don't get it on any climbing equipment)!
Clothing: pack for all weathers, windproof and warm layers, t-shirt and either shorts, combats or tracksuit bottoms. Don’t wear jeans or trousers that hamper movement. If you have any OutdoorLads branded clothing then please wear it as it will give the group a good level of visibility.
Food & drink
You will need to bring your own packed lunch with you. There are a couple of options for purchasing food within a 10 minute walk of the meeting point if you want to stop in before we meet up for the day at 09:30.
Remember to bring plenty of water, as being July it could (hopefully) be quite a warm day.
