The Clydach Gorge was ideally placed to be site of some of the earliest iron furnaces in South Wales, being near to sources of raw materials (ironstone, limestone, timber for charcoal) and abundant waterpower to drive the machinery.

We'll start at the canal wharf in Gilwern, before making our way up the gorge along the paths of various tramroads and water leats, stopping off at a few waterfalls along the way. After the 17th century Devil's Bridge we'll climb up to the later railway and follow that back to Gilwern.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.
