Join us for a circular walk along the beautiful north Devon coast to the stunning fishing village of Clovelly which is rated the most beautiful and Instagrammable village in Devon.
The 11 mile walk will start in the small Hamlet of Brownsham from where we will walk down through a beautiful wooded valley to join the South West Coastal Path to Mouthmill Beach and an abandoned lime kiln. After a brief stop we will climb back up along the coastal path with spectacular views along the north Devon coast towards Baggy Point. This part of the coastal path has some steep ascents and descents before skirting the edge Clovelly Court estate. We will then descend down to the beautiful village of Clovelly where we will stop for lunch.
Clovelly is a picturesque fishing village which was once owned by the Queen of England. It is perched on a 400 m cliff and is vehicle free with the only means of transporting goods via donkeys or sledges over the steep cobbled streets. It has been used as a film set many times including 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society'. We will stop for an hour giving you time to explore the narrow network of streets, the 400 year old Inn and have lunch sitting on the fishing quay.
After lunch we will ascend back up the cliff and back inland passing through the beautiful grounds of Clovelly Court and farm. The path will take us through rolling fields, woods and valleys back towards Brownsham. There will be an option to end the walk at this point (around 4 hours) at a National Trust Cafe were we started the walk or continue on for a final loop back along the stunning coastal path to Chapman Rock and Eldern Point before returning inland via Exmansworthy and Brownsham.
If the event is fully booked, join the wait list as people frequently drop out during the week before an event and you are likely to get a place on the walk.
Dogs are welcome to join us on this event but please note we do ask the following:
- Please appreciate the fact that not everyone is a dog owner or lover- especially when we stop to eat
- Please ensure you adhere to the Countryside Code at all times - see (Keeping Dogs Under Effective Control)
If your dog is uncontrolled and strays in open land frightening other animals or livestock, the leader is supported by the OutdoorLads board of trustees to ask you to leave the event as this is not acceptable behaviour.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Footwear: Trainers should be fine for this walk. We'll be walking along a well maintained, predominantly tarmac'd footpath/cyclepath so it may be more comfortable to wear trainers than heavy hiking boots.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
Food & drink
Bring at least 2 litres of water to keep you well hydrated during the walk. It is recommended to bring a packed lunch and snacks for along the way. There are cafes and places to buy food in Clovelly but it likely to be very busy (and expensive) so it is recommended to bring your own packed lunch.
