This is a 16.5km circular route, setting off from the small village of Brockweir which is an add-on for local ODL members who are not attending the ODL Wye Valley camping weekend. If you are booked on the camping weekend then you do not need to book this walk.
The route follows the east bank of the River Wye to Bigsweir Bridge and from there we cross into Wales and a steep climb to Cuckoo wood and the Duchess Ride viewpoint, which provides a commanding view over the Wye valley below.
The path then heads down hill to the top of Cleddon Falls before we stop for lunch at the Whitestone woods picnic area.
After lunch the route passes Botany Bay and Barbadoes wood down to the remains of the 12th Century Tintern Abbey, which fell into ruins due to the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century. From here we cross back into England via the old railway bridge and follow the river back to the start point.
This walk is approximately 16.5km in length, has some very steep sections, with a total height gain of 380 metres.
