Join Alex for this 10-mile walk across meadows and parks in Grantchester, Coton and Cambridge.
We will head out of the station through the suburb of Newnham, across the River Cam, and then upstream along the west bank of the river until we reach the pretty village of Grantchester. We will then veer westwards through the village before crossing into open countryside.
Our route then turns northwards towards the summit of a hill where, weather permitting, we will have views across to Cambridge, and Essex and Suffolk beyond. We will then turn eastwards and head back downhill into the city, past various university and college buildings.
On our way back we head along the Backs, past the famous Cambridge landmarks of King's College chapel and the Mathematical Bridge, before ending at the station where people can begin their onwards journeys or head for a well-deserved pint.

Is it dog friendly?
Unfortunately this walk is unsuitable for dogs: we pass stables, kennels and a rifle range in quick succession which may startle our four-legged friends.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres.
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain.
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters.
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece).
Trousers: jeans are not ideal as they become heavy and cold in the rain. Breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and shorts are convenient for warm days.
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather. Breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry.
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer.
Sunglasses: recommended just in case at any time of year
Sun cream: the sun can be unexpectedly fierce so please ensure you protect yourself.
Food & drink
We will stop for lunch en route so please bring a packed lunch. There are plenty of options to pick up something at Cambridge station if necessary.
Weather and time permitting we will head to a pub near the station once we have finished the walk.
