We will meet at a tram stop and take the tram to Bulwell to start the walk. The walk will then be linear back to the start point.
We’ll explore the historic Bulwell Hall stables and the site of Bulwell Hall, before exploring the Bestwood Country Park Mill Lakes area, the winding engine house, then walking back along Robin Hood's River Lean to our start point.
Bulwell Hall, Nottingham
In the 1930's the Corporation of Nottingham were presented with Bulwell Hall and the immediate parkland. The House was turned into a Sanatorium. In 1939 the House was requisitioned by the Army. From 1943 it was used to house Italian Prisoners of War. The damage incurred by military occupation together with subsidence sealed the house's fate. It was demolished and the site totally cleared in 1958. The only trace of the house used to be the sandstone foundations of a single bay window.
Bestwood Country Park- Mill Lakes area. This is the alignment of the former Great Northern Railway Leen Valley branch. As well as being part of the Robin Hood Way at this point, it is also part of the Sustrans cycle network.
The Winding Engine House Today Bestwood Country Park is a peaceful green oasis, popular with walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers. But until the late 1960’s part of what now forms the park was a sprawling industrial site. Bestwood Colliery was one of the most productive coal mines in Nottinghamshire. Little remains of it now except the Winding Engine House, the colliery headstocks and the Dynamo House, a former electrical substation which houses a cafe.
