An easy 6-mile morning walk exploring the Wey Navigation, and in the afternoon enjoy the various attractions at Mercedes-Benz World plus the famous Brooklands racetrack and museum. Easily reached from London Waterloo by train.
Starting from Weybridge train station in Surrey, we shall make our way along the Thames Path where we shall see D’Oyly Carte Island, the former home of Richard D’Oyly Carte, producer of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. We shall then follow the charming Wey Navigation to Coxes Flour Mill which continued to receive goods by water until the mid-1980s. En route, we pass four historic locks until reaching the famous Brooklands racetrack and museum www.brooklandsmuseum.com Entrance to Brooklands on the day costs £22.00 without donation or £24.20 with donation.
Brooklands is the birthplace of British Motorsport and Aviation and includes the first purpose-built motor racing circuit and is the site of many engineering and technological achievements throughout the 20th Century. There are historic racing cars, motorcycles and bicycles, an incredible collection of London buses spanning various decades, and various airlines at Vickers Aircraft Park. There is also the option to step on board the only Concorde with visitor access in the South East of England. The ‘Concorde Experience’ is a 25-minute tour which costs an extra £6.
Next to Brooklands Museum is Mercedes-Benz World which is free to enter www.mercedes-benzworld.co.uk . There is opportunity to explore the exhibitions and learn about the history of the Mercedes-Benz brand over three floors of attractions and displays. There is also the option of taking a ‘Driving Experience’ – this includes driving on the Wet Skid Circle and Handling Circuits or taking a 4x4 on an off-road purpose-built driving facility. There are also options if you prefer a passenger ride with a Pro Driver. If you are interested in participating in one of the driving experiences, pre-booking is recommended although check with the leader first on what time slot to book.
From Mercedes-Benz World, it is a short 10-15 minute walk back to Weybridge train station.
