13 miles (21 km) with 709 m of ascent. Mostly grassy slopes but could be harder going above the snow line.

Kick off 2023 and burn off these festive calories with a walk up three fine hills in the Scottish Borders.

Broad Law, at 840m is the highest point in the Borders region and the second highest peak in the Southern Uplands, but only by a mere 3 metres! Its summit is home to the highest air traffic beacon in the UK and a police communications mast.

On its own it makes quite a short walk, but we plan to combine it with two neighbouring hills - Cramalt Craig (831m) and Dollar Law (817m) to make a 13-mile circuit. Not as daunting as that may sound for early January as we start at a height of around 450m and complete the last few kilometres on a minor road along the north side of the Megget Reservoir. The walk should take between 5 and 6 hours, but bring a head torch if you have one, just in case we finish the walk in dusk.

Dogs: The walk is suitable for dogs, which must be kept under control at all times, particularly near livestock.
