This is a fairly easy circular walk that sets off from picturesque Bradford on Avon in between the River Avon and Kennet and Avon canal. We will pass the Avon cliffe Aqueduct which carries the Kennet and Avon Canal over the River Avon and the Bath to Westbury railway line, and was built by John Rennie and chief engineer John Thomas, between 1797 and 1801. It is a Grade II* listed building. A little further along we reach the point where the River Frome joins the River Avon and here there is a pub stop at The Inn at Freshford, which sits alongside the river.
The next part of the walk follows the banks of the River Frome and passing Iford Manor house whoose origins may be as early as late 15th century. The classical façade was added around 1730, and the hanging woodlands above the garden were planted later in the 18th century; soon after reaching the ruins of medieval Farleigh Castle, built in two phases: the inner court was constructed between 1377 and 1383 by Sir Thomas Hungerford, who made his fortune working as a steward to John of Gaunt. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/farleigh-hungerford-cas… If there is time we will make a visit - the entrance is about £5.
The remaining few miles of the walks are a little more hilly as we cut across between the valleys and back to Bradford on Avon.
Back in Bradford there's the amazing 51m long Tithe Barn to explore which is free to enter, and we can get tea if there' still somewhere open.
