BPW24: Leisure Cycle (Sat 10:30)
17 people attending
3 places left
This activity is part of the OutdoorLads Big Peaky Weekender 2024 and participation is intended for those attending the weekend event.
A 33Km (20 mile) leisure cycle starting and finishing on the Monsal Trail - a former railway line that runs close to the venue.
Bikes can be hired from Thornbridge Outdoors - please speak to Liam on Friday evening. price TBC but believed to be in the region of £17 for the day, payable on site at the bar in advance.
We will cycle along the trail to Millers Dale, passing through several tunnels. To exit the valley and join the road to continue our loop there will be a short section where will have to push our bikes up a steep bridleway. From here we will follow quiet roads to Monyash, a pretty village where we will stop for lunch on the village green. There is a cafe and a pub here. After lunch there will be a short climb to Magpie Mine, a well preserved disused lead mine. We will stop here for a quick look around before a nice long descent into Bakewell where we rejoin the trial. We can stop here or at nearby Hassop Station for afternoon snacks.
This is intended to be a leisurely ride for cyclists of all abilities. There will be plenty of stops for rests, snacks and photos. However, this is the Peak District so we can't avoid hills. A reasonable level of fitness will be required (unless you have an e-bike) but you can take the hills at your own pace as we will wait for you.
You would probably be most comfortable on a wide tyre bike such as a gravel, hybrid or mountain bike. Road bikes may struggle on the Monsal Trail. If you don't haven a suitable bike, you can rent one from the centre.

What to bring
Your will need a bike, one with wheels.
Apart from your bike you may want some of the following:
- Puncture repair kit (or better still a spare inner tube) and tyre levers. Also any special tools that your bike needs.
- Food - bring small snacks such as biscuits, energy bars or gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit is great too
- A cycling bottle attached to your bike and plenty of water
- Eye protection - impact from a bee, grit or even a fly at speed is extremely unpleasant, sunglasses may do if not made of glass and not too shaded.
- Clothing: choose suitable clothes and footwear for the weather forecast and time of year. You will be exercising so lightweight layered clothing is best. Shorts are best even in rain, as they allow free movement of your legs.
- Footwear - Appropriate to your bike
- Cyclist's Helmet - Outdoorlads policy asks you to wear a helmet.
- Bag - Not essential, but if the weather is likely to be changeable or you wish to carry supplies and clothing, a small ruck sack or pannier bags attached to your bike could be very useful. We don't want you getting cold or wet.
- Bike lock - Keep your bike safe if we go for a drink
Food & drink
